The problem may be reproduced, since it may have occurred after I followed instructions in Norman Chan's Maximum PC blog about 20 essential tweaks to improve Firefox performance and fiddled around with about:config. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/20_essential_tweaks_every_firefox_user_should_know I was thinking of restoring the original configurations.
