Actually, it happens every time after it happens the first time - I tried to reboot about ten times after the first failure with no success.

On my last attempt to install 9.10 I managed to restart the computer at least once after the restart done by the installation. The point where I got a black screen was right before the login screen (I did see the mouse logo during the boot up). It feels like XUbuntu cannot find the correct display settings. > Have you installed any updates at that time? Yes, before the failure I installed the recommended updates but nothing else. > Have you installed any hardware drivers? No. > Did you use the Desktop CD or the Alternate CD to install Xubuntu? Is this a 64-bit or 32-bit system? It is a 32-bit system and I used the xubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso image. > Have you tried different iso images? Yes, I burned the mentioned image to a CD twice. Before burning I tested the checksum and before installation I did the data integrity test - no errors found. Same "black screen" behavior with both CD:s. > What happens when you try installing the Ubuntu image? I have burned it but I have not tried it since I very much prefer XUbuntu.
