Reopening this bug because I have new information to report, and also
because I was recently a victim of the bug at least with the latest
Jaunty.
I also seem to run into trouble with sox playing stuff on a bare VT and
switching away from that...same symptoms.
One factor I've noticed is that if the target and source VTs have
different owners, i.e., different users are logged in to each, then the
sound suspends.

mplayer vlc kaffeine all players hang/pause when I switch away from the VT they
use (to other desktop or terminal)
