Thanks. This is not an intended change from Jaunty.
I think what's more likely is that vol_id vs. blkid have different
opinions about what the label on that drive is. Any chance you could
copy&paste the output of
sudo blkid
under 9.10 (karmic), and then boot a jaunty live system again and
copy&paste the output of
sudo vol_id
here?
