Some further comments, because of the reported problems about Maxima and wxMaxima:
1. It is no problem to compile and build Maxima or wxMaxima on Ubuntu 9.10 and the earlier version with serveal Lisp compilers. I am sure that even Maxima 5.17.1 has no problems. I think it is a problem of the Maxima debian package. Not the version of Maxima is the problem, but the package. 2. A look into the file list shows me that the Maxima share code (maxima-share) and the Maxima tests (maxima-tests) are distributed in two different packages. The share code is a must to run Maxima, it is not optional, because a lot of incore functionality of Maxima needs code from the share code. The test code (Maxima testsuite) should run without any error after installation. It is a good idea to have the testsuite in the basic distribution too and to give a hint to start the testsuite after installation.
