Have the same error, Karmic, x86_64 (grub prompt, grub fails to execute grub.cfg).
Here are a few (possibly new) symptoms: * grub.cfg looks fine when editing using vim after booting the system using grub shell commands * however: when using cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg from the grub shell, it shows the content of a different file. (grub root is the loopback device, I can also see my home folder in there).
