Same problems occurred on my IBM ThinkPad X30, now running Xubuntu
Karmic.

Without adding "i915.modeset=0" to the kernel command line, all my
"text" consoles were only blinking and I was unable to login into them.
Login into Xfce was possible. Suspending and hibernating (after
activated through X fce 4 Power Manager) was not working. Without any
xorg.conf file I had probably similar problems like Brian Candler with
flickering, font corruption, windows borders and so on in Xfce (which
occurred randomly after some time).

Adding "i915.modeset=0" to the kernel command line solve problems with
1) text consoles - works fine
2) suspending - works fine
3) hibernating - works fine
Problem with "graphics corruption" (flickering, fonts, ...) stil remains. I
solved this problem by using "AccelMethod" option set to "XAA" and
"ForceEnabledPipeA" option set to "true" in my xorg.conf (as I had it already
in Ubuntu 9.04 - Jaunty).

Brian, can I ask you about your actual xorg.conf file which you are
using now?
