i had not heard about timidity before, if it is installed it was because of ubuntu or some other package. I usually only run skype, mplayer or flash (it really sucks...).
The problem first appeared in beta (where I had no sound at all) and then when karmic was released I do have sound unless I do not play sounds for some time (eg when I go home overnight) as then it dissapears again until i reboot. my solution now is to mute the sound an let an radio stream play all the time.
