The commit mentioned upstream is already applied to Karmic and later:
commit ced909ff048c9950e211783417f3c01361f3be28
Author: Dmitry Torokhov <[email protected]>
Date: Tue Aug 25 19:24:10 2009 -0700
Input: i8042 - add Acer Aspire 5536 to the nomux list
When KBC is in active multiplexing mode, disabling and re-enabling the
touchpad with the special key leaves the touchpad dead. Since the laptop
does not have any external PS/2 ports disabling MUX mode should be safe.

So if you are still seeing the issue on karmic the fix does not work for
your laptop.
Could those of you with this issue please test on the latest karmic
kernel. If you are still affected could you attach the output of DMI
decode and also indicate the name under which the machine is sold.
Thanks.
