I think this issue is nvidia or compiz related, I can reproduce this only with gedit or openoffice,everything happens randomly. If the pc is a bit stressed is easier to get this kind of errors. I had this error with every version of Ubuntu I've tried so far, starting from Gutsy. Somebody suggests to activate the option "Force Synchronization between X and GLX" in Compiz configuration under Utility -> Worarounds. But even with this option activated sometimes the problem appears again. I'm using Karmic fully updated, I have an nvidia 8400 with drivers version 185, installed by the regular ubuntu way.
