checked alsamixer settings.
tried muting the IEC958 device
installed 'linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic'
Have you checked for the slmodemd daemon to see if it is running?
Run this command again while trying to play something: sudo fuser -v
/dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/seq*
