Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

jva...@portalith:~$ "foo bar"
jva...@portalith:~$

This should report that foo bar is not found, but instead shows nothing.
This is because "$1" is not quoted in the command hook in
/etc/bash.bashrc. See patch for details.

Using: Ubuntu 9.10

bash:
  Installed: 4.0-5ubuntu2
  Candidate: 4.0-5ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 4.0-5ubuntu2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

** Affects: bash (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
