Well. I can't test it ;-), but your analysis seems correct from looking at the code... You want to be running the "server-bigiron" i386 kernel, which has CONFIG_HIGHMEM_64G enabled, and should work a little better. I'm going to reject the bug for now, please mark it "confirmed" if you see this problem using the "server-bigiron" kernel.
