Public bug reported:

Both the standard and alternative Ubuntu ISO images (Karmic 9.10) use
the RockRidge ISO extensions to extend the length of filenames. This
causes problems for users who are burning ISOs from Windows, because
Windows natively (and most software that runs on it) don't support
RockRidge.

Even UNetbootin, which is specifically made to create USB-bootable
installs from ISOs doesn't understand RockRidge, and fails to create
usable USB images.

example problem:

pool/main/l/linux/firewire-core-modules-2.6.31-14-generic-di_2.6.31-14.48_amd64.udeb
is truncated to
pool/main/l/linux/firewire-core-modules-2.6.31-14-generic-di_2.6.31-14.48_amd64.ud

pool/main/l/linux/pcmcia-storage-modules-2.6.31-14-generic-di_2.6.31-14.48_amd64.udeb
is truncated to
pool/main/l/linux/pcmcia-storage-modules-2.6.31-14-generic-di_2.6.31-14.48_amd64.u
