not the issue. IEC958, in Alsa deselect the IEC958. No effect.
It is to do with Pulseaudio, which has more control over the sound card 
selection in this version. 

In Sound Preferences, there are NO soundcards listed, so none to select. 
Output is listed as 'Dummy Output' Stereo

Alsa has the correct soundcard, but an inability to use it.

I have tried getting rid of Pulseaudio, it just kills the whole GUI and can't 
get back into Ubuntu.
It just seems to be this laptop, my Toshiba is fine, The Packard Bell is useful 
though because of the HDMI output.

Any advice helpful, preferably with detailed instruction, as only
moderately competent with linux.
