Yes, Weatherman was right, my [B] rig's DVDRW burner was worn out and had to be replaced, and learning about the new Beta version GRUB2 is now my main priority, as it's screwing up my multi-boot configuration. It's all complicated by the need to separate underlying Ubuntu 9.10 Bugs from Mint-8RC Bugs. Rather like dealing with Vista and Windows 7, I'll probably have to give the ext4 distributions their own physically separate hard drives before I can get anywhere. I suspect that GRUB2 will prove to be 'the bridge too far' rather than ext4 which merely complicates partition imaging and restoration. It's been a long time since I used Launchpad in anger, but if I can remember how to do it, I'll close this Bug Report, effectively as a 'red herring'.
