Back to using Ubuntu 9.04, again, with gnome-ppp and the linuxant usb modem driver.
It is successful, and I am online with the Zoom dial-up usb modem at 43,000 bps. I'll stay with what works, until I read the solution to Ubuntu 9.10 has been found.
