Hi uwe. I believe that recompiling your kernel every time it's updated
is a less than ideal solution. If the ath5k driver works for you that
process would be unnecessary.

Since you are using madwifi I'm sure your ath5k is blacklisted in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ath_pci.conf and in
/etc/modprobe.d/madwifi.conf. So if you want to test ath5k, you can un-
blacklist it in one of the files, while blacklisting the madwifi modules
in the second file.
