Some additional information.
Running << sudo alsactl init >> yielded syntax errors in the file
/usr/share/alsa/init/default. At several lines in the file, the braces were
mismatched: Eg,
ENV{has_pmaster_vol}=="true",CTL{values)="100%",GOTO="headphone0_end"
I fixed those errors, after which alsactl init produced the following
errors:
