Michael, thank you for taking the time to report this bug. This is
obviously a very serious issue that needs to be addressed. From my own
personal experience, this is likely a run-away log file or some other
process continuously writing for some reason. The dmesg message you
pointed out has to do with filesystem checks after the hard shutdown you
had to do, so it is not directly related to the bug.
If you could, the next time that it happens, boot up using a LiveCD of
Ubuntu so that you can examine the filesystem without modifying it. If
you are familiar with the terminal, you can search around the filesystem
to find a huge file. Or you could use the Disk Usage Analyzer, as it
may be able to tell you which file is overly big.
