Hi,
we're hunting down a similar problem on an i386 karmic with a remote CIFS
filesystem.
The problem does not appear on a amd64 karmic installation, and not with the
older 2.6.28 kernel.
Gerhard: Can you reproduce the problem even without gcc using simply
/usr/bin/stat helloworld.c
