I see the same on this machine, however I dont think the problem is Skype. I got the same problem recording with gnome-sound-recorder, 2 to 3 of my 4 cores max out after a few seconds with gnome-sound-recorder while recording and pulseaudio process each taking 120-160% cpu. in fact, just running pavucontrol uses 130% cpu.
Interesting perhaps: the "duration" in gnome sound recorder is totally off the scale while recording, minutes increase every second, the hour count seems to go up every minute. I do not have this problem on my other Karmic machines were pulse audio works normally. Perhaps a clue? This is the soundcard of my problem machine: 80:01.0 Audio device: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) (rev 10) BTW, if I plug in a USB headset in the same machine it works flawlessly. Im running Karmic, installed all updates, including backports and proposed.
