OK, compiling from source.... I successfully compiled from source, as noted above. I then ran roadnav from inside the build tree, i.e. "cd .... roadnav ; src/roadnav". It ran as noted above, with just the map showing. I then ran "sudo make install". I ran it on the VM from the main menu (Applications-> Graphics-> Roadnav), and all the widgets showed up. I ran it from the command line, but with now path specification (i.e. the installed version at /usr/local/bin/roadnav). That also worked, and showed all the widgets. Even over an SSH tunnel.
