Ok, the problem seems to be with the video quirks of acpi. Here are the 
following steps that lead me to this conclusion:
1) suspend
2) resume
3) switch to vt-1 and then vt-7
4) check the jobs, and notice that 99video and vbetools are still running.

If I kill 99video, then the computer starts functioning again. Also,
checking lshal, it seems that *all* the quirks are on (I believe that's
the default, even though I doubt most new hardwares require these
quirks). So, what's the best way for me to disable these quirks? Is this
the right place to ask this question?
