I have also had this problem. I experimented with installing ubuntu to a
flash drive and when I rebooted the flash drive didn't work and neither
did my laptop.

The default option was for hd0. At the very least this should be more
clear then having to click on some obscure "Advanced" button on the page
after selecting the partitions. Also, when you tell ubuntu to manage the
partition information for you and use the whole drive it should be smart
enough to decide that is the device you want to boot from.

This is a great way for people to mess up their grub information.
