Thanks Joshua, I'm still just feeling my way with Ubuntu Linux and I couldn't find the file that you referenced so I tried changing the default settings for bandwidth and then restarted. Happy to say that Ubuntuone connected immediately and syncronised my files without any problem. Seems to confirm the default bandwidth preferences setting as being the problem. Hope this helps with a full solution for others.
