If I remember correctly, I logged in using Kbuntu from the option at the bottom left of the login screen. That got me in and then I think I reaffirmed my log-in name and password to the same I had been using, then re-entered in Ubuntu. So you may want to compare Kbuntu's login code with Ubuntu's, altho I haven't had that problem with Ubuntu since, with either 8.10 or 9.04.
I am now running 9.04 and it is working great!
