You did not attach the error messages from the write process, so I may only guess for the most probable reason.
As you mention cdrecord, you should know that Ubuntu does not distribute cdrecord but a fork called "wodim" that has been made from a 4 year old version of the original software. This fork is full of bugs that never have been in the original software.
