Open Office crashes on the introduction screen when I attempt to open
"writer". I have been able to open other types of documents "draw" or
"impress" and then open a text document from "File --> New --> Text
Document". I was then able to open a file and save it in .doc format
without crashing! I was then able to make changes and add notes to a
file without saving it. This is great news so far, and thanks for the
suggestions above.

I did a search in Synaptic, and it looks as if I do have sun-java6-jre,
sun-java5-jre, and "default-jre-headless" all installed. Would deleting
one of these solve my problem (which is still a problem, but not as
severe as before).

I didn't get any error message on installation that I'm aware of.

Thanks!
