In Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic
This error is caused by nvidia driver 190.xx series

!!! HERE IS A SOLUTION !!!

I have started recovery mode in GRUB and I uninstalled my nvidia drivers from
command line
sudo sh cudadriver_2.3_linux_32_190.18.run --uninstall

Before be able to use new nvidia driver you must uninstall all previous nvidia
drivers.
Check in System > Administation > Hardware Drivers for nvidia drivers and
remove them.

shut down x server:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

download new driver
wget http://www.nvidia.com/.......last driverlinux_32_190.18.run (find last one)

install new driver
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.42-pkg1.run

restart xserver
$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

For me it works. Good luck.
