Actually, you can return to the desktop shell. If you click the side tab for Applications > Search and Containment Settings
In the Desktop Activity area click the Search and Containment drop down and click on Desktop. You will have to add a panel and the widgets for the panel but, its a way to get the desktop. What I did was change the newspaper section to the desktop so I could have the standard KDE desktop. Maybe it should be a little betting explained but, It is there and installed ready to implement.
