Ack! I'm getting bitten by this bug too:
$ sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sdb /home/conrad/Desktop/temp
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

running Karmic 64-bit; drive is attached via USB. I had backed up all my
files to that drive in Jaunty before I installed Karmic :)
