This happened during a normal update, using the ubuntu update manager.
Before installing the new kernel the filesystem was suddenly 'read-
only', and I had to reboot and run a manual fsck to fix a lot of issues
on the disk. After that I was only able to complete the kernel update
with 'sudo dpkg --configure -a'
