"Why would you mount a PTP camera at all?"

why should a user care about the difference between a PTP and Mass
Storage camera? they just want to plug in their camera and retrieve
their photos.

The advantage of mounting is that multiple apps can share access to the
device. I don't know why the devs of the leading apps are taking so long
to upgrade their scripts. Getting the apps to work with gvfs-gphoto is
not hard and as far as I can tell there is little to no performance
impact.

It actually takes more work to mount the ptp camera, but it is work that
gvfs-gphoto takes care of. This should be making it easier for would be
application writers. (I know, I'm one of them:
