That was quite some time ago ... as I recall I was in the process of doing the dist-upgrade to Jaunty and the freeciv client failed to upgrade, breaking the dist process. I needed the system up sooner than later, so I ended up uninstalling the package entirely, re-upgrading, and then installing the Jaunty freeciv package.
