After a clean install and installing the various packages one by one I
found that it has nothing to do with depmod apparently. I just happen to
always install fglrx along with kernel restricted modules. All that it
is is that the restricted modules are needed in order for the wireless
networking to work.

So to get wireless networking working on this machine it was a simple:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic

which brings in all the linux-restricted-modules-generic stuff. We
should probably change the bug description to reflect this.
