I have a similar problem with a forcedeth ethernet card.

* If i have set my static IP-adresses with network-admin nm-applet keeps
on saying that i have no network connection.

* If i then empty the interfaces file in /etc nm-applet keeps looking for a
network connection and after a while it says that i have one, it finds my card
but i don't have a connection due to that
i need to configure the IP-adresses statictly.

This feels like hight priority bug, for me its not that hard to just remove
network-manager but for new ubuntu people its a showstopper to not have
internet connection. Okay yes there is a connection but every program that
supports network-manager i need to switch off the "Work offline" thingy to get
going and thats not easy for new people eather.
