Hi Philippe. Thank you for your reply.
Does this mean I should submit it at gnome.org instead? I don't do much interaction with local systems, so for me it's critical that I can set the default (or at least a profile and tie that to a bookmark) to match that of the remote systems I connect to. Forcing a behaviour is wrong, imho, when one size does not fit all. The issue should probably be sent to the upstream developers (GNOME) for needing to set a default encoding in a terminal profile. However I will mark this bug as 'Invalid' because I think it is critical for most users to use UTF-8 if only to interact with the file system. ** Changed in: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- Inconsistent charset behaviour https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/487315 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in “gnome-terminal” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal While it's possible to add charsets beyond UTF-8 using the add/remove function, it's not possible to remove UTF-8 from the list, and as far as I can see, there's no way of setting a different default than the (to me) useless UTF-8 charset in gnome-terminal. This is a problem that's twofold: Ability to remove UTF-8 from the list (less important) The ability to set another charset as default (highly important).
