I think I have solved this issue.
It seems not to have been a kernel/driver issue after all.
A complete poweroff (AC) from the LAN card by powering off the power source
unit (+ rebooting the router + 30 sec waiting) did help.
Now net connection works on every boot and also with the new kernel 2.6.26-5.5
(2.6.32-rc8).
