I'm not sure if this is the same problem in karmic/9.10. I ran into it looking
for some IP/Network WHOIS data:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
vinc...@laptop:~$ jwhois 91.189.89.223
[Querying whois.ripe.net]
[Unable to connect to remote host]

ii jwhois 4.0-1
Improved Caching Whois client
ii linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic 2.6.31-14.48 Linux
kernel image for version 2.6.31 on x86/x86_64
ii linux-image-generic 2.6.31.14.27 Generic
Linux kernel image
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The example nigel mentions still doesn't work:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
vinc...@laptop:~$ jwhois nic.gg
[Querying whois.isles.net]
[whois.isles.net: Name or service not known]
[Unable to connect to remote host]
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
