I've installed some old kernel versions and tried to get the i8k working
with those, with no luck. The oldest one I've tried so far was
2.6.24-16-generic.

I do get these messages when doing a modprobe: (in that same kernel version)
i8k: no version magic, tainting kernel
i8k: unable to get SMM BIOS version
Dell laptop SMM driver v1.14 21/02/2005 Massimo Dal Zotto ([email protected])

It looks like Massimo is no longer maintaining this driver. I guess the kernel
team in general is stuck with that responsibility now?
http://people.debian.org/~dz/i8k/README.i8kutils

The fact that it doesn't work with an old kernel makes me think it's no
longer a kernel regression, but maybe some power-management widget added
in jaunty? I don't what it might be though...

The only further debugging I can think of is to try booting to a dapper
live-disk and see if that works.
