The bug appeared after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10. Before the upgrade the
printer worked fine. After the upgrade, after noticing that the printer
does not work, I tried to delete and re-add the printer, but it did not
work (same error). Then I removed the printer, executed:

 sudo chown -R root:root /usr/lib/cups/filter

(as suggested by somebody in the on-line discussion)
and added the printer again. After that the printer did work.

So, as far as I'm concerned, the problem is fixed, but it seems to me
that there is a problem in transferring (some) printers to Ubuntu 9.10
from the previous release, and inexperienced users may be lost.
