Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Unlike others, this happened on a fresh karmic 32 install. I reformatted
my karmic 64 to install a fresh 32 bit copy on it. I was playing sound
nicely on the fresh install. After an apt-get upgrade and a reboot (I'm
not sure if this is the reason), I can't play sound anymore.

I can't see my sound card anymore on the Sound Preferences dialog. No
device is present on "Hardware" and "Input." On "Output," it's just
"Dummy Output"
