I guess that your mentioned bug 275998 is about internal mic and pulseaudio not being boosted at all. For me, it is just one application that doesn't work after installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic- generic.
Both Audacity and Sound recorder are recording fine from internal mic (although the vent is very loud in the recording). The problem remains only with Skype, where the recording level is not boosted.
