Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and I am not able to get my external mic to
work. The computer has no internal mic, so I have not been able to test
it in that way. I am using the gnome sound preferences dialog, and the
level meter does not budge no matter which "connector" I choose.

However, I have been able to get line-in to work. this requires going in
to alsamixer on the command line, unmuting the line-in channel. Then the
level meter will work for the "line-in" connector.

I have Debian 5.10 installed on the same computer, and the microphone
works there.

Here is the information about my sound card as reported in alsamixer on ubuntu
