Public bug reported:

might have something to do with #489344 and the sl-modem driver i tried
to install - which hard crashed the machine.

Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 fresh install. Just tried to install sl-modem driver
from System->Administration->Hardware Drivers which made the machine
crash. Problems to use Update Software are all over since then.
