Thanks Felix. I can confirm that your ppa build fixes this issue for me. Two things I noticed about your build. I get a very brief error message appearing between "grub loading" and the grub menu. It seems to be complaining about an unrecognized character. Secondly update-grub takes a very long time to do anything.
