I recently noticed a similar problem involving swap and totem-video-thu under Karmic. When transferring a video file over samba to my computer desktop (meaning that the thumbnailer is trying to create a thumbnail for an incomplete file as it downloads), the transfer will stall while the thumbnailer jumps up to 10-15% CPU and starts writing furiously to my swap space. Admittedly, the computer is old (Pentium 4 with 256MB ram and a 500MB swap partition), but this behavior seems to be a problem. I've also been following another swap bug having to do with pulseaudio (launchpad 424655) that I think might also be affecting my system, but this behavior manifesting during file transfers seems specifically related to the thumbnailer. I've never reported a bug before, so please let me know what logs I should attach (and how best to get at them...)
