Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gnome-disk-utility
1. Created a new fat filesystem.
2. Check:
- - - -
r...@katana:~# fsck.vfat -nv /dev/sdb2
dosfsck 3.0.3 (18 May 2009)
dosfsck 3.0.3, 18 May 2009, FAT32, LFN
Checking we can access the last sector of the filesystem
Boot sector contents:
System ID "mkdosfs"
- - -
3. Set the (still empty) label to "USB-FAT1".
4. Check again:
- - -
r...@katana:~# fsck.vfat -nv /dev/sdb2
dosfsck 3.0.3 (18 May 2009)
dosfsck 3.0.3, 18 May 2009, FAT32, LFN
Checking we can access the last sector of the filesystem
There are differences between boot sector and its backup.
Differences: (offset:original/backup)
71:55/20, 72:53/20, 73:42/20, 74:2d/20, 75:46/20, 76:41/20, 77:54/20
, 78:31/20
Not automatically fixing this.
Boot sector contents:
- - - -
When interpreted as hex ascii the original bytes (55,53,42,etc) spell
"USB-FAT1", the label I set.
While the backup bytes are still set to 0x20 aka "[space]".
Apparently something forgot to update the backup boot-sector.
Funny thing is that checking the filesystem using the UI reports that it is
clean.
I repaired using "fsck.vfat -rv /dev/sdb2" and copying the original to backup.
Does not seem to be a critical problem because the mounts just fine.
But it may lead to confusion in the event of a "real" problem and the FS
needs to be checked and repaired.
