Since my last test I have found that the reason I was not able to use the connection is that the /etc/resolve.conf was not pointing at my DNS servers - once fixed I was able to connect and use the connection (using it now!). But Modem Manager is still segfaulting and I am still downloading the most recent updates to test with.
